Standard BMI can't tell muscle from fat, so it labels many lean, athletic people "overweight" or "obese." Add your build or your body-fat percent and this tool shows the truer picture.
BMI is just weight divided by height squared. It was built in the 1830s to describe populations, not individuals, and it has no way to know whether a pound is muscle or fat. Muscle is denser than fat, so a lean, well-trained body weighs more than BMI expects and gets pushed into "overweight" or "obese" even when body fat is low. That is not a flaw in you. It is a flaw in the tool. At 5 foot 9 and 215 pounds with 13% body fat, BMI reads "obese" while your actual composition is athletic.

This tool also shows FFMI, your lean mass scaled to height. It is a far better read on muscularity than BMI. When you pick a body type it is estimated for you; enter your real body fat and it becomes exact. As a rough guide for men, the high teens is average, the low twenties is fit, and the mid twenties reflects a high degree of muscle. Women read a few points lower on the same scale. It is context, not a verdict.
Use BMI as one quick screen and nothing more. Body fat, lean mass, waist measurement, and how you move and feel tell the real story. If the number surprised you, the answer is not to trust it less or more, it is to measure what actually matters.
